Date Jan-Dec 1845
Document Type Correspondence
Reference CO 208/103
Library / Archive The National Archives
Collection Name New Zealand Company Original Correspondence, etc.
Description Letters refer to colonist contact and land disputes with Māori peoples, and to the floundering financial and banking affairs of the Company with third parties such as the Union Bank of Australia. Statements of land surveyed, land transfer orders and land exchanges are also commonly referred to throughout the correspondence. Letters relating to land sales made by the Māori often list items traded for purchase and give detailed accounts of purchase agreements. Some letters refer more closely to conditions of settlement, enclosing population and agricultural returns for areas such as Wellington. There is also a printed copy of 'The Church Almanac', given to Colonel Wakefield by the Bishop of New Zealand, recording the church accounts for Wellington, Whanganui and New Plymouth from 1845.
Series Description This series contains original correspondence and entry books of the New Zealand Company which were handed over to the Colonial Office after the surrender of the company's charters in 1850. Also included are minutes, accounts, registers of emigrants and land transfer records.
Biographical Note / History The New Zealand Company was a chartered company formed in 1839 and incorporated in 1841 with power to buy, sell, settle and cultivate land in New Zealand. It did not prove a satisfactory agency for colonising New Zealand and was induced to surrender its charters in 1850. It was finally dissolved in 1858.
