Description Letters and journals relating to the New Zealand Company. Includes Captain Wakefield's journal from the ship 'Whitby', 27 April to 21 May 1841 which describes sailing conditions, activities on board and their navigational position. Also includes diaries of the preliminary expedition, also on the Whitby, 21 May to 4 July and 5 July to 18 August 1841 which give daily details on provisions, climate, shipping sighted, accidents on board and their navigational position. Journals followed by letters regarding the status of ships arriving in New Zealand, lists of emigrants with diseases, mental health issues or disabilities, receipts and payments of the New Zealand Company and papers discussing the running of the company.
Series Description This series contains original correspondence and entry books of the New Zealand Company which were handed over to the Colonial Office after the surrender of the company's charters in 1850. Also included are minutes, accounts, registers of emigrants and land transfer records.
Biographical Note / History The New Zealand Company was a chartered company formed in 1839 and incorporated in 1841 with power to buy, sell, settle and cultivate land in New Zealand. It did not prove a satisfactory agency for colonising New Zealand and was induced to surrender its charters in 1850. It was finally dissolved in 1858.
