Description | Applications and letters sent to directors of the New Zealand Company by British and Scottish inhabitants wishing to emigrate to New Zealand. Letters appeal for further information of shipping schedules, routes, journey conditions and the possibility of assisted passage. Many applications refer to advertisements seen in local newspapers, encouraging labourers such as mechanics to apply. Other letters refer to the Company's discharge of the 'Mooltan' ship from their employ and an outbreak of cholera on board. Letters refer to land warrants, orders and transfers for crown lands granted to the Company. There are also several printed items, including baptism certificates solemnised in the Parish Church of Halifax and applications for land conveyance. Some papers refer to lands purchased by the Canterbury Association and their business affairs. |
Series Description | This series contains original correspondence and entry books of the New Zealand Company which were handed over to the Colonial Office after the surrender of the company's charters in 1850. Also included are minutes, accounts, registers of emigrants and land transfer records. |
Biographical Note / History | The New Zealand Company was a chartered company formed in 1839 and incorporated in 1841 with power to buy, sell, settle and cultivate land in New Zealand. It did not prove a satisfactory agency for colonising New Zealand and was induced to surrender its charters in 1850. It was finally dissolved in 1858. |
