Description Letters to and from the New Zealand Company offices discussing payment of salary to officers, buying of shares, passages to New Zealand, packets of letters to be delivered to chartered ships, estimates of government costs in New Zealand, ships chartered, German emigration to New Zealand, asking after relatives and friends who have left for New Zealand and discussing violent clashes with New Zealand's indigenous population on the land bought by Alfred Wansey. Also Includes a printed pamphlet offering advice on 'Emigration to New Zealand', posters for a public meeting in Chard on emigration to New Zealand, advertisements and a full report from Dudley Sinclair to Lord Stanley on the state of the colony.
Series Description This series contains original correspondence and entry books of the New Zealand Company which were handed over to the Colonial Office after the surrender of the company's charters in 1850. Also included are minutes, accounts, registers of emigrants and land transfer records.
Biographical Note / History The New Zealand Company was a chartered company formed in 1839 and incorporated in 1841 with power to buy, sell, settle and cultivate land in New Zealand. It did not prove a satisfactory agency for colonising New Zealand and was induced to surrender its charters in 1850. It was finally dissolved in 1858.
