Collection Name War and Colonial Department and Colonial Office: Emigration Entry Books
Description Administrative letters sent by R. W. Hay to Major General Bourke referring to financial dispatches to be paid to masters and agents of passenger ships transporting British emigrants to New South Wales. These letters relay detailed information relative to the assisted migration of British families travelling to Australia, giving specific information regarding ships, passengers and their professions, ages and accompanying family members. Unmarried women and men skilled in engineering, making clothes, furniture and equestrian products are amongst the most commonly noted passengers here, with cancelled payments crossed out on several pages. One letter dated 15 March 1833 also directs Bourke to "pay all the amounts on behalf of passengers by the ship the Princess Elizabeth into the hands of the Australian Banking Company in the event of Mr Edward Thompson's absence". There is an index at the back listing amounts to be advanced against individual names to whom they were granted and the page number on which each letter appears.
