Description John Hellberg talks about the wages he received when working as a miner, how promotion worked and whether there was any union activity. He discusses strikes action before moving on to the home he bought, a change of career to being a carpenter, his children and what happened during the Depression. He also talks about the contribution the Finnish have made to Minnesota and his wood working hobbies.
Series Description The Minnesota Finnish American Family History Collection (c.1860-1984) materials range from brief genealogies to extensive family history narratives relating the experiences of several generations. Collections include photographs, documents, and oral histories. The Collection offers a wealth of primary material with special strengths in women's, regional and family studies, as well as political and social events important to the area's Finnish Americans. The collection also provides a reliable tool for genealogical research, including as it does documents such as birth, death and citizenship certificates and papers.
Biographical Note / History Begun in 1979 and completed in 1984, the Minnesota Finnish American Family History Project had as its purpose the documentation of the personal histories and experiences of Minnesota Finnish Americans. The Project was sponsored by the Minnesota Finnish American Historical Society and the Iron Range, St. Louis County, and Otter Tail Historical Societies.
