Description | Applications made to emigrate to New Zealand by medical staff and labourers in particular, applying for free and assisted passage owing to their experience in such fields as faming and construction. There are receipts for passage money to emigrate on board the 'Phoebe Dunbar', whilst other letters refer to land orders and transfers for allotments in the New Zealand colonies sold to emigrants and British citizens, as well as disputes over certain plots and compensation granted in the form of land. There is a report of a meeting held between directors of the Company and proprietors, held on Tuesday 2 July 1850 at New Zealand House, Broad Street Buildings in which the reduction of the establishment was ordered. There are also letters and copies of tender papers referring to the establishment of steam communication in New Zealand. A journal records in detail the journey, passengers and provisions on board the 'Berkshire' emigrant ship travelling from London to Wellington under direction of the Company, captained by Mr Whyte. |
Series Description | This series contains original correspondence and entry books of the New Zealand Company which were handed over to the Colonial Office after the surrender of the company's charters in 1850. Also included are minutes, accounts, registers of emigrants and land transfer records. |
Biographical Note / History | The New Zealand Company was a chartered company formed in 1839 and incorporated in 1841 with power to buy, sell, settle and cultivate land in New Zealand. It did not prove a satisfactory agency for colonising New Zealand and was induced to surrender its charters in 1850. It was finally dissolved in 1858. |
