Description Applications and letters made to emigrate to the New Zealand and Australian colonies. Many of the applicants appeal for free passage for themselves and family members. Other letters transmit land orders, exchange of titles and company shares, or share reports of illness amongst passengers on board 'The Lady Nugent', as well as news of a child delivered on the same ship. There are printed statements enclosed within some letters listing the provisions and quantities allowed different passengers on the ship 'Larkins'. Printed items include forms of application for land in the settlements of Wellington, Nelson and New Plymouth. There is also a copy of 'The London Gazette' no. 21096, dated 17 May 1850 which includes articles referring to meetings of the Company and re-election of the Directors.
Series Description This series contains original correspondence and entry books of the New Zealand Company which were handed over to the Colonial Office after the surrender of the company's charters in 1850. Also included are minutes, accounts, registers of emigrants and land transfer records.
Biographical Note / History The New Zealand Company was a chartered company formed in 1839 and incorporated in 1841 with power to buy, sell, settle and cultivate land in New Zealand. It did not prove a satisfactory agency for colonising New Zealand and was induced to surrender its charters in 1850. It was finally dissolved in 1858. There is also a printed copy of a bound pamphlet entitled 'Testimonials in favour of Mr Peter Macomish, Teacher, Edinburgh', recommending his application to travel aboard the 'Eden' to assume a teaching appointment in the New Zealand colonies.
