Description | Includes applications made to the directors of the New Zealand Company by those wishing to emigrate. Many seek employment abroad as surgeons or labourers, with several enquiring as to the procedures they must follow to emigrate, qualify for monetary aid or free passage, and the price of taking certain belongings such as livestock. There are letters sent between officials regarding town planning in the city of Wellington and the selection, sale and transfer of Crown lands in Nelson and Wellington. Many of these letters enclose lists of lands proposed for sale, extracts from land registers and advance slips from purchasers. The settlement of Otago, New Zealand becomes a common theme in the latter letters. There are also several printed items here relative to advertisements of the company published in newspapers such as The Daily News. A printed agreement with regulations made between the company and proprietor of the 'Madras' is also included, stipulating passenger conditions of voyage etc. Lists of goods exported from England to New Zealand in the year 1845 also feature. |
Series Description | This series contains original correspondence and entry books of the New Zealand Company which were handed over to the Colonial Office after the surrender of the company's charters in 1850. Also included are minutes, accounts, registers of emigrants and land transfer records. |
Biographical Note / History | The New Zealand Company was a chartered company formed in 1839 and incorporated in 1841 with power to buy, sell, settle and cultivate land in New Zealand. It did not prove a satisfactory agency for colonising New Zealand and was induced to surrender its charters in 1850. It was finally dissolved in 1858. |
