Collection Name Department of Agriculture: Immigration
Description Includes proceedings of the 1870 Immigration Conference in Ottawa discussing the present state of emigration from England, the lack of female labour, assisted emigration, land grants arranged with the Dominion Government and juvenile migration. Also includes correspondence surrounding salaries for agents, arrival figures, the employment of passengers in steerage and instructions to agents.
Series Description Records created and maintained by the Immigration Branch of the Department of Agriculture. As immigration and colonization became increasingly important to the new Dominion government, the high volume of information flowing into and required from the Minister's office overwhelmed the docket system of record-keeping.
