Description Letters relating to the business affairs of the New Zealand Company. Many refer to preliminary expeditions and proposals of the Company for the establishment of a second colony in New Zealand, and the company's appointment of Captain Arthur Wakefield to act as agent for that settlement. Information regarding surveying and engineering staff required to undertake the expedition are referred to within these letters, particularly the proceedings and instructions to be given to Frederic Alonzo Carrington, Chief Surveyor of the new settlement of New Plymouth. Company concerns about settler claims to land in such areas are also referred to frequently. Other letters discuss grievances due to the non-fulfilment of contracts entered into by the New Zealand Company towards their purchasers of land. Plans of the company for an equitable adjustment of the claims of the Nelson land purchases and for a re-distribution of the land are referred to, marking their acknowledgement of liability in such cases. There are also journal extracts included by those undertaking land surveys and from Colonel Wakefield himself, as well as copies of surveying reports created by Mr Tuckett.
Series Description This series contains original correspondence and entry books of the New Zealand Company which were handed over to the Colonial Office after the surrender of the company's charters in 1850. Also included are minutes, accounts, registers of emigrants and land transfer records.
Biographical Note / History The New Zealand Company was a chartered company formed in 1839 and incorporated in 1841 with power to buy, sell, settle and cultivate land in New Zealand. It did not prove a satisfactory agency for colonising New Zealand and was induced to surrender its charters in 1850. It was finally dissolved in 1858.
