Description | Letters and applications sent to Directors of the New Zealand Company by those wishing to emigrate to the New Zealand colonies, principally to serve as labourers, surveyors and schoolmasters. There are also several letters sent by members of female emigration societies enquiring into Company procedure and opportunities for female migration to colonies in both New Zealand and Australia. The transfer, settlement and orders of rural land in the New Zealand colonies are also discussed. Printed items include template applications to purchase land in New Zealand settlements, applications for assisted passage and lists of medicine and dietary provisions to be stored on board emigrant vessels, often setting such information alongside class of passenger accommodation. |
Series Description | This series contains original correspondence and entry books of the New Zealand Company which were handed over to the Colonial Office after the surrender of the company's charters in 1850. Also included are minutes, accounts, registers of emigrants and land transfer records. |
Biographical Note / History | The New Zealand Company was a chartered company formed in 1839 and incorporated in 1841 with power to buy, sell, settle and cultivate land in New Zealand. It did not prove a satisfactory agency for colonising New Zealand and was induced to surrender its charters in 1850. It was finally dissolved in 1858. |
