Collection Name New Zealand Company Original Correspondence, etc.
Description Letters to and from emigration agents for the New Zealand Company. The majority concern applications for free passage to New Zealand by individuals and families. There are also a large number of replies to advertisements for much-needed positions, such as surgeons, engineers, mechanics, agricultural labourers and surveyors. The sectioning and selling of colonial lands in settlements such as Nelson also feature heavily. There are letters informing company members of reports and assessments made of emigrant ships, detailing any repairs made, number of berths available etc. The poor state of employment, commerce and trade in Britain is again noted as a factor encouraging applicants. There are also some printed documents setting out the price, location, increasing value of lands owned by the company, as well as processes and applications to be completed by those intending to purchase land. There is a copy of an advert for the 'National Sail & Waterproof Cloth Company' in Rugeley, Staffordshire. Towards the end there is also a copy of a printed application template to be completed by those seeking an allotment of land in the New Zealand Company's second settlement.
Series Description This series contains original correspondence and entry books of the New Zealand Company which were handed over to the Colonial Office after the surrender of the company's charters in 1850. Also included are minutes, accounts, registers of emigrants and land transfer records.
Biographical Note / History The New Zealand Company was a chartered company formed in 1839 and incorporated in 1841 with power to buy, sell, settle and cultivate land in New Zealand. It did not prove a satisfactory agency for colonising New Zealand and was induced to surrender its charters in 1850. It was finally dissolved in 1858.
