Description | Letters to and from the New Zealand Company. This item is mostly made up of letters sent to the New Zealand Company from people applying for passage to New Zealand. Many state their reasons for wanting to travel, which family members they intend to bring with them, and the skills that they can offer once in New Zealand. Certain professions, such as those of surveyor, carpenter, mason, mechanic, shepherd and surgeon were particularly desirable. There is also brief mention of some land sales and purchases, the state of the company's stocks and an appeal from Dartmouth Harbour for the company to let its ships stop there before setting off for New Zealand. |
Series Description | This series contains original correspondence and entry books of the New Zealand Company which were handed over to the Colonial Office after the surrender of the company's charters in 1850. Also included are minutes, accounts, registers of emigrants and land transfer records. |
Biographical Note / History | The New Zealand Company was a chartered company formed in 1839 and incorporated in 1841 with power to buy, sell, settle and cultivate land in New Zealand. It did not prove a satisfactory agency for colonising New Zealand and was induced to surrender its charters in 1850. It was finally dissolved in 1858. |
