Biographical Note / History | Anchor Line ship "John Bell" built in Glasgow, 1854. Tons 1,208 net. 231.5 x 33.2 x 27.7. Converted into an auxiliary steamer in 1856. Gross tons 1,102, net 982 tons, 250 H.P. Employed in Anchor Line services Glasgow to Canada and New York from 1854 to 1862. Went to India as transport in 1857 (Indian Mutiny). Sold to Allan Line in 1862 and renames "St Patrick". This vessel and the "Tempest" were the two first vessels employed by the Anchor Line when they started the Glasgow New York service in 1856. |
