| Description | Hanna Hellberg arrived in the United States in 1917 and went to work in a male boarding house as a laundress and general maid of work. Whilst there, she met Wayne Olala, a circus performer, they married and Hanna learnt to be a performer in fairs around the United States. She describes her parents and early family life, the movement to America through Ellis Island, night school classes to learn English and naturalisation. She goes into detail about her performing life and how this was hit by the Depression and the death of her first husband. She also explains how she met John, her second husband. |
| Series Description | The Minnesota Finnish American Family History Collection (c.1860-1984) materials range from brief genealogies to extensive family history narratives relating the experiences of several generations. Collections include photographs, documents, and oral histories. The Collection offers a wealth of primary material with special strengths in women's, regional and family studies, as well as political and social events important to the area's Finnish Americans. The collection also provides a reliable tool for genealogical research, including as it does documents such as birth, death and citizenship certificates and papers. |
| Biographical Note / History | Begun in 1979 and completed in 1984, the Minnesota Finnish American Family History Project had as its purpose the documentation of the personal histories and experiences of Minnesota Finnish Americans. The Project was sponsored by the Minnesota Finnish American Historical Society and the Iron Range, St. Louis County, and Otter Tail Historical Societies. |
