Description Consists of the fifth and last diary of Sophie Puckette, in which she describes teaching at school in Pullman, Washington, her return to Innisfree (originally Del Norte), Alberta, and her engagement to Jim Miles. The diary ends just before her wedding.
Series Description From Series 1 – Sophie Puckette Miles, personal papers, 1897-1971. Series consists of diaries, certificates, school records, greeting cards, various legal documents, sympathy letters on Jim's death, recipes, programs, and news clippings.
Biographical Note / History Sophie Alice Puckette (1885-1971) was born in Kansas, USA and moved to Alberta with her family in late 1903. They homesteaded at Del Norte, which was renamed Innisfree in 1905. Sophie attended Alberta College in Edmonton and in 1907 taught for a year in Pullman, Washington. She married Jim Gareld Miles in 1908. Jim G. Miles (1883-1958) was born in Missouri, USA. He homesteaded near Innisfree in 1905. He farmed and worked for farm implement dealers until the family moved to Edmonton in 1920. There he sold real estate, and in 1925 joined the Edmonton Police Force. He returned to real estate when he retired in 1947. The Miles had five children Margaret (Hanlan), Ray, George, Edwin and Esther (Seutter). In 1934 Margaret (1909-1995) married Roy Mitchel Hanlan (1912-2000). They had several children, including Phyllis (Chapotelle). Margaret was a teacher, and also sold instructional materials to schools as "Your Instructor Lady". The Hanlans moved from Edmonton to a farm near Westlock in 1956.
