Description Diaries kept by Valentine Reimann between 1861 and 1903. The first diary contains entries for 1861 and 1889-1903, followed by mostly complete separate diaries for 1862-1965. Each diary contains short entries recording daily activities, the weather, details of his correspondence, visits to and from family, births, deaths and marriages of family and friends. These diaries also contain details about military marches, drills, exercises, combat and the death of comrades during his service for the Union Army in the American Civil War.
Series Description The collection includes correspondence, diaries, financial and legal records, genealogical information on the Cornwall and Lawrence families, and materials on Reimann's service in the Civil War in Company H., 141st Regiment of New York State.
Biographical Note / History Reimann was a German immigrant who settled in New York State. He fought during the American Civil War for the Union Army in General Sherman's regiment.
