Description Miscellaneous letters and documents written by and about Carl Schurz, including a lengthy letter to 'Staats-Zeitung' objecting to an article that attacked his politics and explaining his point of view on various political subjects, such as finance. Also included are three transcriptions and translations of letters containing details of Schurz's early life in Germany, with an accompanying biographical note, and transcriptions of correspondence from Schurz to Governor S.P. Chase.
Series Description This collection was separated from the records of the National Carl Schurz Association. It contains scattered writings by Schurz; letters by Schurz's mentor, Gottfried Kinkel; biographical writings about Schurz and members of his family; and letters and telegrams concerning the celebration of Schurz's seventieth birthday.
Biographical Note / History Carl Schurz was born in Liblar, near Cologne, Prussia. After participating in the 1848-1849 German Revolution, he immigrated to the United States with his wife Margarethe in 1852. They settled in Wisconsin, where Schurz was admitted to the bar and became active in Republican Party politics. He served as American minister to Spain in 1861-1862, as a general in the Union Army from 1862 to1864, was elected to the Senate from Missouri in 1868, and served as Secretary of the Interior in 1877-1881. Throughout his career he was an active spokesman for the German-American community.
