Description Papers discuss British 'Boy Labour' in New Zealand, the reasons behind such schemes, and the ramifications on the population of the country. Lists reveal the various New Zealand provinces in which farms received applications, and mark the numbers of applications received against the number of farmers recommended as prospective employers. There is also a submission to the Conference on Emigration at the Royal Colonial Institute on 30-31 May 1901 proposing emigration to Canada, suggesting selection conditions and eligibility criteria for possible colonists. There are several papers and articles here promoting and advertising the work opportunities in Australia, particularly Western Australia and New South Wales. Several commercial papers list rules, fare prices and instructions for applying for assisted passage and various berths on board emigrant ships.
Biographical Note / History In 1911 Thomas Edward Sedgwick organised for a group of 50 boys to be sent from England to New Zealand on board the S.S. Authentic before the outbreak of the First World War. They were sent as part of an experiment to ascertain whether young British boys might help alleviate a shortage of farm labourers in New Zealand and offer a solution to the declining levels of employment opportunities in the crowded British cities. They were trained in all aspects of farming life, and the wages they earnt were paid to the Labour Department while the boys were awarded weekly pocket money.
