Collection Name War and Colonial Department and Colonial Office: Emigration Entry Books
Description Letters mainly sent and received by the Australian Secretary of State, many of which refer to European applications to emigrate to the Australian colonies. Returns of land sales, deeds to allotments and purchase of crown lands are regularly discussed, as are enquiries into free and assisted passage. Other letters refer specifically to legislation passed to regulate and restrict immigration of Chinese labourers into Australia, particularly in New South Wales. Applications are also made by families of convicts already transported to Australia and there are several letters transmitting data on the population, employment, religious beliefs and other statistics from the Australian colonies.
